myka baum

Myka Baum works predominantly in photography and investigates its ephemeral nature in relation to the environment. Light plays an integral role within the work, an ambiguity between the precision of photographic
apparatus and the structured randomness of the organic are at play. There is a fascination with cycles of transformation and an attempt to encapsulate natural phenomena through abstract processes lies at the heart of Myka’s practice.

in ‘Rotten’ the artist is using film as matter – placing seeds and soil onto the physical film. When the artist feels that there has been sufficient growth or corrosion on the film she will scan the negatives for printing. When encountering Myka’s work the painstaking process is to an extent out of sight – the viewer is left with essentially an abstract image, leaving you to unravel the layers of natural and mechanical reproduction.
